8/26 announcements

August 26, 2012
Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

I Corinthians 15:1-11:  Continuing our reading from I Corinthians, we hear St. Paul present the facts of the resurrection as the basis for our salvation and the cornerstone of our faith.

Matthew 19:16-26:  St. Matthew describes Jesus’ encounter with the rich young ruler.. In this incident we learn that spirituality is not founded only on keeping the law, but on giving mercy to others and denial of oneself.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; for the Lord hath done a mighty act with his own arm.  He hath trampled down death and become the First-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Martyrs  Adrian and Natalie: Thou didst deem that faith which hath salvation to be riches never lost or plundered.  Thou forsookest thy father=s impiety, and thou didst follow thy Master, becoming rich in His Divine gifts, O glorious Adrian.  With the godly-minded Natalie, who emboldened thee, entreat Christ God, O Martyr, that our souls be saved.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos:  By thy holy birth-giving, O pure one, Joachim and Anne were delivered from the reproach of barrenness; and Adam and Eve were delivered from the corruption of death; thy people do celebrate it, having been saved from the stain of iniquity, crying unto thee, The barren doth give birth to the Theotokos, who nourisheth our life.

Please be reminded of the following:
Be very careful with the Blessed Bread when you take it after communion.  Because this bread has been blessed, we should take care not to let crumbs fall on the floor.  Parents, especially, please help your children to choose a small piece and treat it carefully.
Also, at the end of the liturgy, maintain a prayerful disposition during the veneration of the cross as the prayers of thanksgiving after communion are still underway.  Please exchange your greetings with each other in the Fellowship Hall during Coffee Hour.

Please remember the following in your prayers:  Pete and Maria Costas; Steve, Sheryl and Stephen Chamblee; Amy and Brantley Oliver; Aidan Milnor, the Milnor family; Sam and Lamia Dabit and Sammie; David Turner’s mother Mary Jean; Georgia Buchanan, George Johns (Georgia’s grandson) and his family; Dorin and Carolina Lavric and Victor (Carolina’s brother); Mary Greene (Lee and Kh. Sharon’s sister); Fr. Stephen Tewfik; Dn. Howard and Sh. Gail Shannon.

Please continue to pray for the health of His Grace, Bishop ANTOUN.

Please be reminded that the Sacristy/Vestry which is adjacent to and behind the altar in our church is considered by the Orthodox Church to be part of the Sanctuary (Altar area) and should not be entered without the blessing of the priest for a specific purpose.  If you need to speak with a member of the clergy while they are in the Sanctuary, please ask them to come to you in the nave.

Please remember Fr. Joseph and Kh. Joanna Bittle, and their daughter Abigail, in your prayers.

We welcome Phillip Schelver today as a new catechumen at St. Peter’s.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Welcome and Many Years! to Titus Lasseter who was baptized yesterday.  Congratulations to his parents, Phillip and Nikki, and to his godparents, Dorin and Carolina Lavric.

Fall Festival/Square Dance:  We are planning a Fall Festival with Square Dancing for the month of October.  The tentative date is either Saturday, October 20th or Saturday, October 27th.  If you have any interest in this, please let Sh. Charlotte Algood know.  Please give her your feedback also on the proposed dates.

Calendar Items:
*    The Men of the parish meet for lunch and fellowship on the first Thursday of the month.
*    Stewpot schedule (together with Holy Resurrection) – December 29th.

When you host Coffee Hour or the meal for a Feast, please make sure that the oven, warmer, and coffee maker are turned off afterwards.  On several occasions in the past, the cleaning ladies have found the oven still on when they came in to clean later during the week.

Fasting Discipline for August
After the 15th, the traditional fasting (no meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, wine and oil) is observed on the remaining Wednesdays and Fridays of the month.  August 29th is also a strict fast day in remembrance of the beheading of the Forerunner.

Quotable:  “Today we have more time to dwell on our problems than our ancestors ever did.  Our free time, whether in old age (now greatly extended) or simply between tasks, is dominated by a hundred and one distractions, often organized to take place one after the other.  Thus, when we do get a free moment, the thoughts in our heads think that nothing is happening and want to move on quickly to something more pressing.  This leaves us with a feeling of ‘lack of fulfillment’ which some people actually mistake for life itself, when in fact it is simply the chattering of the mind,  It is no more life itself than the exhaust of a bus is the bus itself.”
