1/29 announcements

January 29, 2012
Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Galatians 3:23-29;4:1-5:  In this reading from Galatians we hear St. Paul explain that prior to the coming of Christ, we were under the Law and hence divided, but now that Christ has come we are justified by faith in Christ and have become one, belonging to Christ.  Therefore, we are no longer under bondage to the Law and the world, but are now free as children of God.

Matthew 15:21-28:  In the passage from Matthew we see our Lord demonstrate His mercy by healing the daughter of a Canaanite woman.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  O compassionate One, thou didst descend from the heights; thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that thou might deliver us from passion.  Thou art our Life and our Resurrection, O Lord, glory to thee.

Troparion of the Heiromartyr Ignatius: As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision.  Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of the truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Ignatius.  Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.
Kontakion of the Presentation: Thou, O Christ God, who by your Birth, didst sanctify the Virgin’s womb, and as is meet, didst bless Simeon’s arms, and didst also come to save us, preserve thy fold in wars, and confirm them whom thou didst love; for thou alone art the Lover of mankind.

Quotable:      “Western psychotherapy is often concerned not only with healing the mind, but also encouraging patients to come to terms with their feelings and emotions.  Moreover, at least in everyday speech, it is assumed that the source of these emotions or feelings is the heart.
In the East, we can discern another scheme.  Here, the one thing that can be said of the mind is that it is divorced from the heart.  In this fallen state, it issues a constant stream of  logismoi, the torrent of ‘thoughts’ that accompanies our daily lives.  However, in a less demonstrable way (the Fathers do not really talk about emotions), the mind is also the source of emotion and feeling.  These originate in the mind as logismoi which are felt, in a reactive way, in the physical body; these reactions are what we call feelings.  Feelings, then, in fallen man are as broken and unreliable as the thoughts that give them birth.”

Timothy to teach concerning God, the Savior of all men, and by his conduct to be an example of godliness to unbelievers.

Quotable:  “In the broadest of terms, one might say that Western civilization is dominated by the human mind, and ‘knowing’ generally takes precedence over ‘being.’  In the East by contrast, experience is valued over thought.  Rather than the mind, it is the nous of man—described by St. Makarios as the ‘eye of the heart’ and identified by St. Diadochos as the ‘innermost aspect of the heart’—that is considered the most important element by which a person communicates with God.  This crucial element, the center of spiritual intelligence, is all but ignored in Western writings.  Western philosophers actually use the word nous, but when they do so it is little more than a synonym for ‘mind’.”

January 15, 2012
Twenty-ninth Sunday after Pentecost

Colossians 3:4-11:  As we read in Colossians, we see St Paul encouraging the Church to practice the virtues of compassion, kindness, and humility.  He reminds us that love is the bond which holds us together and calls us to let the peace  of Christ to rule us.

Luke 17:12-19:   In the reading from St Luke we see the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ as He heals ten lepers, only one of whom thanks the Lord for being healed.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  When Mary stood at thy grave looking for thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above thy revered tomb, and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men.  Thou led hades captive and wast not tempted thereby.  Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world; O thou who art risen from the dead!  O Lord, glory to thee.

Troparion of St. Paul:  With the streams of thy tears, thou didst cultivate the barrenness of the desert; and by thy sighings from the depths, thou didst bear fruit a hundredfold in labors; and thou becamest a luminary, shining with miracles upon the world, O Paul, our righteous Father.  Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Troparion of St. John:  Since thou hadst with fervor longed after the Lord from thy youth, thou leftist the world with its delights and nobly didst strive in valiant ascetic deeds.  Thou didst pitch thy hut before the gates of thy parents; thou didst break the demons’ snares, O all-blessed Father.  And therefore, as is meet, hath God glorified thee, O John.

Quotable:      “The way the Orthodox teachers look at the story of Adam and eve is quite different from the way it is generally understood in the West.  In the West, commentaries tend to emphasize the themes of disobedience, guilt, sin, and remorse, including a fairly heavy hint that the sin of our first parents was somehow sexual in nature—an attitude that would have enormous impact on the development of Western psychology many hundreds of years later.
For the east, by contrast, the story of Adam and Eve is, at its heart, a story of disintegration, fragmentation, and estrangement.  The man and the woman—and the world in which they lived—were torn apart by their behavior, and vast gaps came to exist between God and man, between heaven and earth, between one person and another, between the genders, and finally even within the human personality itself.  Each and every person is internally fragmented and externally isolated from the outside world, right down to the ultimate depths of his or her being.  Fragmentation within the human personality is observed essentially as the division between the mind and the nous or heart.”

1/8 announcements

January 8, 2012
Sunday after Theophany

Ephesians 4:7-13:  From our reading in Ephesians we hear St Paul explain how Christ gave apostles and prophets to the Church in order that through their work we might attain maturity in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 4:12-17:   Jesus settles in Capernaum after the imprisonment of John the Baptist and there began His public ministry, preaching a gospel of repentance.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let us believers praise and worship the Word, co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation; for he took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh, to suffer death, and to raise the dead by his glorious Resurrection.

Troparion of Theophany:  By thy baptism, O Lord, in the River Jordan, worship to the Trinity has made its appearance; for the voice of the Lord didst come forth to thee with the testimony, naming thee beloved Son; and the Spirit in the likeness of a dove, confirming the truth of the word. Wherefore, O thou who didst appear and light the world, glory to thee.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of Theophany:  Today thou hast appeared to the universe, O Lord, and thy light hast been shed upon us, who praise thee with knowledge, saying, Thou hast come and appeared, O unapproachable Light.

Quotable:      “Before we can begin to explore the Mysteries, therefore, we must come to a better understanding of the Orthodox conception of the nature and relationship of the mind and the nous or heart.
Like almost everyone alive, the great teachers of Orthodoxy saw that the world is not a perfect place.  God is perfect in Himself, but His creation, the world about us, has some obvious flaws.  The Fathers attributed this situation to the narrative in the first few pages of the Bible that tells the story of Adam and Eve.  Through a misuse of freedom God had given them, Adam and Eve were expelled from paradise.  We, their descendants, inherit and experience this state of exile with them until the moment when our participation in the life of Christ within the Church, and the healing that brings, leads us back to where we belong.”
