Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
Indiction of the Ecclesiastical Year

I Timothy 2:1-7:   From our reading in St. Paul=s first letter to Timothy, we hear him exhort Timothy to offer intercessory prayers for all without partiality, and to give special attention to prayer for those in authority.

Luke 4:16-22:  In a synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah concerning the anointing of the Christ and the blessings that he will bring to the Jewish people.  Then He tells them that He is the fulfillment of that prophecy.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  The stone being sealed by the Jews, and thy pure body being guarded by the soldiers, thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life to the world.  Wherefore, the heavenly powers acclaimed thee, O Giver of life, crying, Glory to thy Resurrection, O Christ! Glory to thy kingdom!  Glory to thy gracious providence, O only Lover of mankind.

Troparion for the Indiction: O Maker of all creation, Who hast established the times and seasons in Thine own power:  bless the crown of this year with Thy goodness, O Lord, and keep our rulers and Thy flock in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, and save us.

Troparion for the Righteous Simeon the Stylite: Thou becamest a pillar of patience and didst emulate the Forefathers, O righteous one:  Job in his sufferings, Joseph in temptations, and the life of the bodiless while in the body.  O Simeon, our righteous Father, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos:  By thy holy birth-giving, O pure one, Joachim and Anne were delivered from the reproach of barrenness; and Adam and Eve were delivered from the corruption of death; thy people do celebrate it, having been saved from the stain of iniquity, crying unto thee, The barren doth give birth to the Theotokos, who nourisheth our life.

Quotable:  “To kindle in his heart such a divine love, to unite with God in an inseparable union of love, it is necessary for a man to pray often, raising the mind to Him.  For as a flame increases when it is constantly fed, so prayer, made often, with the mind dwelling ever more deeply in God, arouses divine love in the heart.  And the heart, set on fire, will warm all the inner man, will enlighten and teach him, revealing to him all its unknown and hidden wisdom, and making him like a flaming seraph, always standing before God within his spirit, always looking at Him within his mind, and drawing from this vision the sweetness of spiritual joy.”

Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday after the Dormition

I Corinthians 1:10-17:  St.  Paul appeals to the Corinthians to put away their divisions and to be   joined together in Jesus Christ.

Matthew 14:14-22:  In the reading from St Matthew we hear about Jesus’ feeding the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish.  In this miracle we see that Jesus is the Bread of Life.

Troparion of the Resurrection: Thou didst shatter death by thy Cross; thou didst open paradise to the thief; thou didst turn the mourning of the ointment-bearing women into joy, and didst bid thine Apostles proclaim warning that thou hast risen, O Christ, granting the world Great Mercy.

Troparion of the Dormition:  In thy birth-giving, O Theotokos, thou didst keep and preserve virginity; and in thy falling-asleep thou hast not forsaken the world; for living thou wast translated, being the Mother of Life.  Wherefore, by thine intercessions, deliver our souls from death.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Dormition:  Verily, the Theotokos, who is ever watchful in intercessions, who is never rejected, neither tomb nor death could control.  But being the Mother of Life, he who dwelt in her ever-virgin womb didst translate her to life.

Quotable:  “First of all it must be understood that it is the duty of all Christians—especially of those whose calling dedicates them to the spiritual life—to strive always and in every way to be united with God, their creator, lover, benefactor, and their supreme good, by whom and for whom they were created.  This is because the centre and the final purpose of the soul, which God created, must be God Himself alone, and nothing else—God from whom the soul received its life and its nature, and for whom it must eternally live.  For all visible things on earth which are lovable and desirable—riches, glory, wife, children, in a word everything of this world that is beautiful, sweet, and attractive—belong not to the soul but only to the body, and being temporary, will pass away as quickly as a shadow.  But the soul, being eternal by its nature, can attain eternal rest only in the Eternal God:  He is its highest good, more perfect than all beauty, sweetness, and loveliness, and He is its natural home, whence it came and whither it must return.  For as the flesh coming from the earth returns to the earth, so the soul coming from God returns to God and dwells in Him.  For the soul was created by God in order to dwell with Him for ever; therefore in this temporary life we must diligently seek union with God, in order to be accounted worthy to be with Him and in Him eternally in the future life.”

Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday after the Transfiguration

Romans 15:1-7:  St Paul encourages us to deny ourselves on behalf of others for our own edification.  He reminds us that the Lord has brought salvation to the Gentiles, thus giving hope to those who were lost.

Matthew 9:27-35:  The Lord Jesus again demonstrates His mercy by healing two blind men and casting out a demon from a man possessed.  We see that the Lord has compassion for all those who are oppressed by sin, death and Satan.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  When Mary stood at thy grave looking for thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above thy revered tomb, and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men.  Thou led hades captive and wast not tempted thereby.  Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world; O thou who art risen from the dead!  O Lord, glory to thee.

Troparion of the Transfiguration:  When, O Christ our God, thou wast transfigured on the mountain, thou didst reveal thy glory to thy Disciples in proportion as they could bear it.  Let thine everlasting light also enlighten us sinners, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Bestower of light, glory to thee.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear.  We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Transfiguration: Thou wast transfigured on the mount, and thy Disciples, in so far as they were able, beheld thy glory, O Christ our God; so that, when they should see thee crucified, they would remember that thy suffering was voluntary, and could declare to all the world that thou art truly the effulgent Splendor of the Father.

Thursday, August 15  (Feast of the Dormition of the Theoeokos)
We celebrate this month the Feast of the Dormition (or “Falling Asleep”) of the Theotokos.  Church Tradition states that the Virgin Mary died in her early fifties.  The icon shows her lying upon her funeral bier.  On either side of the bier stand the Apostles; the group on the left is led by St. Peter who stands at the head of the bier; the group on the right is led by St. Paul who stands at the foot of the bier.  At the time of her death many of the Apostles were scattered throughout the world preaching the Gospel.  However, they all returned to Jerusalem upon learning of her death.  All arrived in time for the burial except St. Thomas.  Standing by the bier is her Son, who had come to receive His Mother’s soul into heaven.  He holds in His arms an infant in white symbolizing the soul of the Theotokos.  The Orthodox Church, although it has never had the need to make it a dogma (as has the Roman Catholic Church), also believes in the Virgin Mary’s “assumption” or bodily resurrection into heaven.  Tradition relates that when the other disciples showed St. Thomas (who arrived in Jerusalem after the burial) the tomb in Gethsemane where the Theotokos had been buried near her parents, they discovered that the tomb was empty.

August 4, 2013
Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Romans 12:6-14:  In the reading from Romans, St Paul encourages us to practice the use of the gifts which the Lord has given to us and to serve the Lord with diligence.

Matthew 9:1-8:  Jesus demonstrates His authority by both healing the physical illness of a paralytic and by forgiving him of his sins.

Troparion of the Resurrection:  Let us believers praise and worship the Word, co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation; for he took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh, to suffer death, and to raise the dead by his glorious Resurrection.

Troparion of the Seven Youths:  Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God.  For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons= strengthless presumption.  O Christ our God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Tuesday, August 6   (Feast of the Transfiguration)
Before His Passion, Jesus ascended Mount Tabor with His disciples Peter, James and John, for the purpose of prayer.  There the three disciples beheld Him transfigured and saw a vision in which Moses the Lawgiver (shown on the icon on the right holding the tablets of the Law) and Elijah the Prophet appeared and spoke with Him.  “And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light.  And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him” (Matt. 17:2-3).  The fact that Moses and Elijah appeared at the Transfiguration is very significant in that these two men were the leading figures of the Old Testament – which confirms the fact that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (see Matthew 5:17).  Their presence confirmed that Jesus was indeed the Christ, the Messiah whom the people of the Old Testament had been anticipating.  The Gospel account also says that a voice from a bright cloud said “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to Him” (Matt. 17:5), further confirming the person of Jesus as the divine Messiah.  When the three disciples saw and heard these things they fell on their faces and were filled with awe (this is shown on the icon by the way Peter, James and John are depicted at the foot of the mount).  When they came down the mountain Jesus told His disciples to “tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead” (Matt. 17:9).  Jesus did not want everyone to know what had happened until the time was right.  The Kontakion of the feast gives understanding as to why Jesus allowed Peter, James and John to be present at His transfiguration: “On the mountain wast Thou transfigured, O Christ God, and Thy disciples beheld Thy glory as far as they could see it; so that when they would behold Thee crucified, they would understand that Thy suffering was voluntary, and would proclaim to the world that Thou art truly the Radiance of the Father.”

Quotable:  “The material closet of a man who is silent embraces only the man himself, but the inner spiritual closet also holds God and all of the Kingdom of Heaven, according to the Gospel words of Christ Himself:  ‘The kingdom of God is within you’ (Luke xvii. 21).  Explaining this text, St. Makarios of Egypt writes:  ‘The heart is a small vessel, but all things are contained in it; God is there, the angels are there, and there is also life and the Kingdom, the heavenly cities and the treasures of grace.'”
