Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

Commemoration of the Venerable Athanasius of Athos

Galatians 5:22-6:2: St. Paul reminds the Galatians that a walk in the spirit comes from life in the spirit and that those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Matthew 8:5-13: Jesus shows His great mercy to those who have faith in Him when He heals the servant of a centurion.

Troparion of the Resurrection: Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; for the Lord hath done a mighty act with his own arm. He hath trampled down death and become the First-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Troparion of St. Athanasius the Athonite: The Angels’ ranks were awed by thy life in the flesh, how though corporeal, and clad with earthly clay, thou didst set forth with courage to invisible wars and wrestlings and didst boldly smite the hordes of the demons with mortal wounds. Wherefore, Christ rewarded thee with abundant gifts in return. Entreat Him that our souls find salvation, O most renowned Father Athanasius.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear. We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion of the Theotokos: O undisputed intercessor of Christians, O mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions though we be sinners; come to us in time, who cry to thee in faith, for thou art good. Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

From Father John: In His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH’s last communique regarding the restrictions for participation in the services at our churches, he stated that, we should follow the guidelines based on our local numbers with the virus. As our numbers locally are rising, we will be dropping back to 25 participants at liturgies (which includes the priest and chanters). I will continue to try my best to rotate, as fairly as possible, our members who are healthy and wish to come to the services.

Please continue to follow the CDC Guidelines to limit contagion and the spread of the COVID virus.

We have been given permission to resume baptisms and chrismations. In the near future we will be scheduling these sacraments for those who would have been baptized and/or chrismated at Pascha this year. More details will be available at a later date.

Quotable: “The act of extending his plan is similarly carried out by Christ through the Holy Spirit; it was through the Holy Spirit that he communicated revelation and created and sustained the community of the people of Israel in its incomplete phase of its existence. It is also through the Holy Spirit that the continuous efficacy of a revelation which has reached its conclusion is maintained through the creating and sustaining of the higher and universal community of the Church. The Church is the dialogue of God with the faithful through Christ in the Holy Spirit. This dialogue, conducted formerly by the Word from afar, becomes an intimate dialogue through the incarnation of the Son of God as man and begins to spread through the Churcholy Spirit, goiven and sent by both the FFaa.”

Third Sunday after Pentecost

Transfer of the Commemoration of the Chief Apostles Peter and Paul

II Corinthians 11:21-23,12:6-9: St. Paul chastises the Corinthian church for their attitude toward weakness, pointing out to them that if anyone can boast, he himself can. Then he reminds them that the Lord’s power is perfected weakness.

Matthew 16:13-19: In the Gospel of St. Matthew we read of Peter’s confession concerning the Divinity of Christ.

Troparion of the Resurrection: When thou, O immortal Life, didst humble thyself unto death, then didst thou destroy death by the brightness of thy Godhead; and when thou didst raise the bowels of the earth, then all the heavenly powers exclaimed, O Christ, thou art the Giver of life! Glory to thee, O our God!

Troparion of Sts. Peter and Paul: O foremost in the ranks of the Apostles and teachers of the world, intercede with the Master of all to grant safety to the world and to the souls the great mercy.

From Father John: In His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH’s last communique regarding the restrictions for participation in the services at our churches, he stated that, beginning the weekend of Pentecost and with the approval of the civil authorities, the Bishops of the dioceses could begin considering petitions for increasing the number of faithful participants in the services to a maximum of 33% of seating capacity. In our case, that would be approximately 60. Due to the configuration of our space, we are holding our numbers at 40. I will continue to try my best to rotate, as fairly as possible, our members who are healthy and wish to come to the services.

As we are loosening restrictions in our state, please continue to follow the CDC Guidelines to limit contagion and the spread of the COVID virus.

ead of ManHead of Maonasteries

Quotable: “But Christ is above all. He is not a human person who stood in need of salvation and who, with this salvation in view, was united to God. He assumed human nature which was not hypostasized in itself but in his own hypostasis in order to make it the fundamental means through which he might extend to all men the deification to which his own human nature was raised. But precisely in this way, Christ can fulfill that work of saving and deifying all, as no other man could do it. He is not a human person united with the divine person; for any man could have been in that situation, inasmuch as he would not be the human center which is also God. In such a case, communion with Christ would not bring about the communion with God himself for which our being yearns. Christ is the divine person who—being man also—makes possible, through that communion accessible to us with himself as man, the communion of all with God himself, or with absolute Person. He is the center and foundation of that act whereby salvation and deification are extended to all who believe. In him, as in its foundation, the plan of salvation has been fulfilledoly Spirit, goiven and sent by both the FFaa.”
