Indiction of the New Ecclesiastical Year

September 1 marks the beginning of the ecclesiastical year. The liturgical year is a body of sacred “signs” which have a present effect. Each liturgical feast renews and actualizes the event of which it is the symbol; it takes the event out of the past and makes it immediate; it offers us the appropriate grace; it becomes the “effectual sign.” The liturgical year is a special means of union with Christ. Every Eucharist unites us intimately with Christ, for in it He is “both He who offers and He who is offered.” Every prayer, being the prayer of the members of the mystical body, shares in the prayer of Him who is the Head of the Body and the only One whose prayer is perfect. We are called to relive the whole life of Christ: from Christmas to Easter, from Easter to Pentecost, we are exhorted to unite ourselves to Christ in his birth and in his growth, to Christ suffering, to Christ dying, to Christ in triumph and to Christ inspiring His Church. The liturgical year forms Christ in us; the liturgical year is Christ Himself, annus est Christus. It includes the cycle of feasts of the saints, the glorified members of the body of Christ. Their sanctity is but an aspect, a shining ray of the holiness of Christ Himself. To celebrate the feast of a saint is to celebrate a special grace that flows from Christ to that saint and so to us. In the same way that the feasts of our Lord in a mysterious way renew the events of His life, so the feasts of the saints make their lives, their merits and their deaths mysteriously actual. Commemorations of the martyrs renew the grace of their violent deaths, so that, as these were a participation in the passion of Christ, this passion is relived in remembering the martyrs. The liturgical year has but one and the same object, Jesus Christ; whether we contemplate Him directly or through the members of His body. Great graces and great spiritual opportunities are offered us during the course of the liturgical year. It provides a frame and support for Christian piety; it gives it a style which is sober and objective; it maintains a bond of unity among believers. Above all, it communicates an inspiration and transmits a life. It acquires its true meaning to the extent that it becomes an adoration in spirit, in truth.

I Timothy 2:1-7: From our reading in St. Paul=s first letter to Timothy, we hear him exhort Timothy to offer intercessory prayers for all without partiality, and to give special attention to prayer for those in authority.

Luke 4:16-22: In a synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah concerning the anointing of the Christ and the blessings that he will bring to the Jewish people. Then He tells them that He is the fulfillment of that prophecy.

Troparion of the Resurrection: When thou, O immortal Life, didst humble thyself unto death, then didst thou destroy death by the brightness of thy Godhead; and when thou didst raise the bowels of the earth, then all the heavenly powers exclaimed, O Christ, thou art the Giver of life! Glory to thee, O our God!

Troparion for the Indiction: O Maker of all creation, Who hast established the times and seasons in Thine own power: Bless the crown of this year with Thy goodness, O Lord, and keep our rulers and Thy flock in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, and save us.

Troparion of the Synaxis of the Theotokos: Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, O Virgin Theotokos, haven and protection of the race of man; for the Redeemer of the world became incarnate of thee; for thou alone art both mother and virgin, ever blessed and glorified. Intercede with Christ God that peace be granted unto all the world.

Troparion of the Chains of St. Peter: O Holy Apostle, Peter, thou dost preside over the Apostles by the precious chains which thou didst bear. We venerate them with faith and beseech thee that by thine intercessions we be granted the great mercy.

Kontakion for the Indiction: O God of all, Thou Who hast made all the ages, O Sovereign Lord, truly transcendent in essence, bestow Thy grace and blessing on the year to come; and, O Most Compassionate, in Thine infinite mercy save all them that worship Thee, Who alone art our Master, and that with fear, O Savior, cry to Thee: Grant unto all men a fruitful and godly year.

If you need to speak with a member of the clergy while they are in the Sanctuary, please ask them to come to you in the nave.

Be very careful with the Blessed Bread when you take it after communion. Because this bread has been blessed, we should take care not to let crumbs fall on the floor. Parents, especially, please help your children to choose a small piece and treat it carefully.

Also, at the end of the liturgy, maintain a prayerful disposition during the veneration of the cross as the prayers of thanksgiving after communion are still underway. Please exchange your greetings with each other in the Fellowship Hall during Coffee Hour.

The Diocese of Miami and the Southeast will hold its second Fall Retreat on September 6-7 at St. Ignatius in Franklin, TN. This will be strictly a spiritual retreat. There will be no business meetings of any kind. There is a $40 registration fee per person (to cover meals and snacks). Please see the flyer in the hallway outside the nave and on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall for hotel information.

The Sunnybrook “Champions for Children Dinner” will be held at the Jackson Country Club on Thursday, September 26th at 6:30 p.m. The Keynote Speaker will be First Lady Deborah Bryant. The cost of the banquet is $75 per person and the deadline for purchase is September 15th. Contact Dn. Terry if you would like to be included at a table(s) with others from St. Peter.

Fasting Discipline for September

In September, the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, eggs, fish, wine or oil) is observed on all Wednesdays and Fridays of the month. The Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross on September 14th is also a strict fast day.

For Parents: Children in the nursery during Coffee Hour MUST be supervised just as they are on the playground. This room is used for Sunday School each week. Children who are unsupervised create disarray and use materials set aside for the teaching of Christian Education. This creates extra work for the Sunday School teachers who have to come in and set the room in order before class or who find supplies depleted unexpectedly. A parent must be in the room with their children at all times. Please help us with this! — Fr. John

Unsupervised children in the Kitchen: For health and safety concerns children are not to be allowed in the kitchen unless accompanied by a parent. Please get ice for your children and do NOT allow them to use the icemaker themselves.

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

I Corinthians 4:9-16: We hear St Paul speak to the Corinthians as their spiritual father and exhort them to imitate him in their actions.

Matthew 17:14-23: The Lord Jesus again shows His abundant mercy when He heals a boy possessed by a demon. We also hear Him foretell His betrayal, death and resurrection, but the disciples do not understand.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

I Corinthians 3:9-17: In the reading from I Corinthians St Paul admonishes the Corinthian Church to give credit to the Lord for the work done by men in building the Church.

Matthew 14:22-34: In our reading from Matthew, we see Jesus’ mastery over creation by walking on the Sea of Galilee; Peter’s attempt to join Jesus shows us that our faith is weakened when we take our eyes off the Lord.

Troparion of the Resurrection: O compassionate One, thou didst descend from the heights; thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that thou might deliver us from passion. Thou art our Life and our Resurrection, O Lord, glory to thee.

Troparion of the Dormition: In thy birth-giving, O Theotokos, thou didst keep and preserve virginity; and in thy falling-asleep thou hast not forsaken the world; for living thou wast translated, being the Mother of Life. Wherefore, by thine intercessions, deliver our souls from death.

* The Men of the parish meet for lunch and fellowship on the first Thursday of the month. However, they will meet on the third Thursday in July (only).

* The Ladies of St. Peter meet at 10:00 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month to pray the Akathist to the Mother of God, Nurturer of Children.

* The Ladies of the parish meet for lunch and fellowship on the last Tuesday of the month.

* There will be a Back to School Swim Party for the Christian Education classes following Coffee Hour on Sunday, August 25th at the home of Mike and Cheryl Pigott.

* The Diocese of Miami and the Southeast will hold its second Fall Retreat September 6-7 at St. Ignatius in Franklin, TN.

* Our next date for serving at the Stewpot is Saturday, September 28th.

* Our annual Fall Festival is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 19th.

* Bishop NICHOLAS will make his next arch-pastoral visit to St. Peter on the weekend of November 8-10. Please mark your calendars now.

Fasting Discipline for August

Following the 15th, the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, eggs, fish, wine or oil) will be observed on the remaining Wednesdays and Fridays of the month. The feastday of the Beheading of the Forerunner on August 29th is a strict fast day.
